Breakfast Club Sponsors
Our students are extremely fortunate to have access to a Breakfast Club on Tuesday, Wednesday & Thursday during the week. Having breakfast in the bellies of students before they enter classrooms for the day, allows them to be prepared for learning and the ability to concentrate better.
This would not be possible if it was not for volunteers and sponsors of the program. We are so grateful for the volunteers that give their time providing breakfast and for the sponsors that donate to the program. If you can contribute to help us provide breakfast, that would help ensure it continues moving forward. You can donate money via the Qkr! App, or at the school office. Sending a jar of vegemite, cream cheese or some honey with your child to school is another way to be a massive help – there is a box at the office where these can be placed. Thank you to those people that have already helped, Breakfast Club is solely dependent on donations, so anything you can contribute is valued and appreciated. Thank you!
Apraxia Awareness
During Monday Meetings with all students, we have been sharing and learning sign language as a whole school. We have some students in our school that require sign language to communicate and if we can all learn as much as possible then this will help us all communicate effectively. Some students have Apraxia, and May is National Apraxia Awareness Month.
Grade 6 student Bella Maine shared in our whole school meeting that Apraxia of speech is when your brain has trouble telling your mouth how to make the sounds you want. It’s like when your tongue and lips don’t work together smoothly to say words, even though you know what you want to say. With some practice and help from speech therapists, you can sometimes train your brain and muscles to work better together so you can talk more easily. Together we believe every child deserves a voice.
On Friday May 24 we will be holding our own Apraxia Day, and encourage all students to wear anything blue to promote awareness. Our SRC students will also be holding activities during recess and lunch.
Music and the Arts
I am pleased to inform you that Mrs Laura Willcox will be teaching drama/performing arts to Grade 3 – 6 students this Term. Students have already accessed the engaging and enjoyable lessons facilitated by Mrs Wilcox, and we are excited for our students to be accessing the Arts in this manner. It was also a pleasure to introduce Mr Clinton Hutton to Boat Harbour Primary School this week. Mr Hutton will be working with two small school bands, and a Grade 3/4 and a Grade 5/6 choir. This is an exciting and evolving space, and I look forward to sharing the progress made as the Term progresses.
Cross Country and Assembly Thursday May 23
We are looking forward to holding our first assembly for Term 2 in week 4, Thursday 23rd May. The Kinder to Grade 2 assembly will start at 9:10am. Directly after this assembly, early childhood students will move to the playground and participate in their Cross Country. Parents are invited to both events. At 11:10am we will hold the Grade 3 to Grade 6 assembly. This will finish in time for their Cross Country to start at 12:00pm. We hope you can join us!
The Cross Country is encouraged for all, with participation a key priority. Students are welcome to run, jog, walk, or a combination of each. Like all school-based activities, students are encouraged to try their best. Walking and completing the course can be fun and still earn points for their House Team.

School Association
Nomination forms for new members for our School Association will come home this week. The only commitment for the Association is two meetings each Term. If you know someone that has a strong voice within our school community and will positively challenge and contribute to the organisational functions of the school, then I encourage you to nominate them. This Association is a mechanism to help guide the direction of our school, and I look forward to working with a driven group of people to ensure Boat Harbour Primary School remains an outstanding learning institution that is focussed on improvement.
Term 2
We have had an excellent start to Term 2. The manner that students have returned after the school holidays has been impressive. Teachers have been able to continue positively with learning programs and share enthusiastically about the progress students are making.
As always, I invite you to make contact with me if there is anything you would like to discuss regarding your child’s learning or about our school.

In Grade 1, we LOVE being part of a hands-on learning environment, especially in Maths. This way of learning gives us an opportunity to put our new skills to use in a real-world context. Recently, we have become experts on understanding place value of 2-digit numbers and knowing that while a digit can be the same, its value depends on where it is in the number. Some of us even tried it out with 3-digit numbers! We can’t wait to use this knowledge to help us with addition and subtraction.
On Wednesday afternoons Preps have Music with Mrs Matthews, this term we have been focusing on keeping a beat. Students listened for, moved to, used body percussion and percussion instruments to play the beat in music.
- Eleanor – beats can go fast and slow.
- Adele – a steady beat makes a boom noise that repeats.
- Xyla – beats can change in different music; I like playing the instruments in music.
- Henry – Your heart makes a beat like a beat in a song.
- Quinn – I like making different sounds with the instruments and playing the beat to the music.
Sorting and grouping in Kinder C
In Kinder C we have been learning about sorting and grouping objects. We have been sorting things by their colour, size and shape. We collected a variety of objects from around the classroom and grouped them into their colours, we did an activity where we sorted monsters by their size. We had a class discussion about when in our everyday lives we have seen things be sorted by size, shape or colour. Some examples that we came up with were:
At the pizza shop they have different sizes - Archie
When we are buying a coffee we can choose what size - Daisy
Clothes we wear have different sizes – Ivy
The bread is together in their types in the supermarket – Ellis
We sort the forks in our kitchen drawer – Riley
The fruits and vegetables at the supermarket are sorted – Merlo-Raine
In Science, grade 2s have been exploring how materials can be physically changed, without changing their composition. We have explored this in the experiment ‘The Bouncy egg’. We predicted what we thought might change and observed these over several days, noting down what we could see. Some predicted the egg in vinegar would bounce but the egg in toothpaste would be stronger and not bounce. What happened, the vinegar egg was bouncy and the egg in toothpaste was changed inside but not bouncy.
“The vinegar is white but has brown bubbles on top” Sam.
“The egg in toothpaste absorbed some of the toothpaste, its stronger” Sahara.
“The egg was on the bottom of the jar and is now floating” Nate.
“The egg in vinegar has increased in size” Edward.
“The toothpaste isn’t bouncy” Kyah.
“The egg is stronger as it didn’t break on the first drop” Will.
“If not in the toothpaste it would have broken quicker” Max.
The membrane from the vinegar egg, “ it feels like a balloon” Maddie.

- By mutual agreement, the coaches may alter this number, but must ensure no team is disadvantaged

- All matches start at 3.30pm
- Schools must contact each other where challenges exist
Inclement Weather
- In the event of inclement weather, the home team will communicate at lunch time to update opposing school
- In light rain, games should continue
- It is the responsibility of the school to communicate with respective families where changes to games occur
Ground Conditions
- In extreme cases, grounds may be closed. Of all the grounds, Yolla Recreation Ground is more likely to be closed due to ongoing use. The Waratah-Wynyard Council will communicate with Yolla District School where the ground is unsuitable for use
- Yolla will in turn communicate with the school concerned
- Langley Park, Somerset, is a back up ground for this roster, particularly for the Yolla Recreation Ground, as well as all grounds as necessary
- Boundary lines do not need to be marked with a white line. In the event this is not possible, marking with cones is perfectly acceptable.

- 15 minutes per quarter to enable games to finish by 5.00pm
Physical Contact
- Wrap tackle (hold with hands), no bumping
Mouth Guards
- Mouth guards are encouraged but not compulsory
Zones

Umpires/Coaches/Time Keepers

- Only one umpire is needed per match as a minimum. Both schools participating in the match should endeavour to supply an umpire.
- Coaches and umpires are expected to prioritise sportsmanship and communicate this to all players, at all times
Scoring
- Informal scoring is acceptable as the children do have an interest. We are not playing for “premiership points” nor ladder positions.
Parental Behaviour
- Parents and spectators are expected to model sportsmanship and communicate this to their own children
- Unfortunately, parents who are unable to demonstrate this will not be permitted to attend matches
Bounces

Goal Post Pads
- All goal posts must have pads
Cricket Pitches on Grounds
- In the event where a synthetic pitch exists on the ground, the umpire must exercise caution and blow the whistle where congested play exists within close proximity
