Principals Report

Breakfast Club Sponsors

Our students are extremely fortunate to have access to a Breakfast Club on Tuesday, Wednesday & Thursday during the week.  Having breakfast in the bellies of students before they enter classrooms for the day, allows them to be prepared for learning and the ability to concentrate better.

This would not be possible if it was not for volunteers and sponsors of the program.  We are so grateful for the volunteers that give their time providing breakfast and for the sponsors that donate to the program. If you can contribute to help us provide breakfast, that would help ensure it continues moving forward. You can donate money via the Qkr! App, or at the school office. Sending a jar of vegemite, cream cheese or some honey with your child to school is another way to be a massive help – there is a box at the office where these can be placed.  Thank you to those people that have already helped, Breakfast Club is solely dependent on donations, so anything you can contribute is valued and appreciated. Thank you!

Apraxia Awareness

During Monday Meetings with all students, we have been sharing and learning sign language as a whole school.  We have some students in our school that require sign language to communicate and if we can all learn as much as possible then this will help us all communicate effectively.  Some students have Apraxia, and May is National Apraxia Awareness Month.

Grade 6 student Bella Maine shared in our whole school meeting that Apraxia of speech is when your brain has trouble telling your mouth how to make the sounds you want.  It’s like when your tongue and lips don’t work together smoothly to say words, even though you know what you want to say. With some practice and help from speech therapists, you can sometimes train your brain and muscles to work better together so you can talk more easily.  Together we believe every child deserves a voice.

On Friday May 24 we will be holding our own Apraxia Day, and encourage all students to wear anything blue to promote awareness.  Our SRC students will also be holding activities during recess and lunch.

Music and the Arts

I am pleased to inform you that Mrs Laura Willcox will be teaching drama/performing arts to Grade 3 – 6 students this Term.  Students have already accessed the engaging and enjoyable lessons facilitated by Mrs Wilcox, and we are excited for our students to be accessing the Arts in this manner.  It was also a pleasure to introduce Mr Clinton Hutton to Boat Harbour Primary School this week.  Mr Hutton will be working with two small school bands, and a Grade 3/4 and a Grade 5/6 choir.  This is an exciting and evolving space, and I look forward to sharing the progress made as the Term progresses.

Cross Country and Assembly Thursday May 23

We are looking forward to holding our first assembly for Term 2 in week 4, Thursday 23rd May.  The Kinder to Grade 2 assembly will start at 9:10am.  Directly after this assembly, early childhood students will move to the playground and participate in their Cross Country.  Parents are invited to both events.  At 11:10am we will hold the Grade 3 to Grade 6 assembly.  This will finish in time for their Cross Country to start at 12:00pm.  We hope you can join us!

The Cross Country is encouraged for all, with participation a key priority.  Students are welcome to run, jog, walk, or a combination of each.  Like all school-based activities, students are encouraged to try their best.  Walking and completing the course can be fun and still earn points for their House Team.

School Association

Nomination forms for new members for our School Association will come home this week.  The only commitment for the Association is two meetings each Term.  If you know someone that has a strong voice within our school community and will positively challenge and contribute to the organisational functions of the school, then I encourage you to nominate them.  This Association is a mechanism to help guide the direction of our school, and I look forward to working with a driven group of people to ensure Boat Harbour Primary School remains an outstanding learning institution that is focussed on improvement.

Term 2

We have had an excellent start to Term 2. The manner that students have returned after the school holidays has been impressive.  Teachers have been able to continue positively with learning programs and share enthusiastically about the progress students are making.

As always, I invite you to make contact with me if there is anything you would like to discuss regarding your child’s learning or about our school.
