Term 3
We have had a very settled start to Term 3. Routines and expectations are engrained, allowing teaching and learning to be our focus from day one. It is a credit to staff and students for enabling this to be our continual direction, creating a safe and supportive environment that is conducive to high quality learning. We are extremely fortunate to have what we do on our little ‘island’ of a school :)
Every school day matters!
The Department recognises the massive impact attendance has in regard to student academic and social growth. Currently at Boat Harbour Primary School, we are creating a model that enables attendance to be maximised, supports families, and ensures accuracy in the way that attendance is recorded. A key element of this is clear communication, and we are continually refining the way that this is achieved. We want families to be able to share with us why students may not be attending and do everything that we can to support them. We are open to feedback about how this could be achieved, recognising that at times this can be contextual, and that different mechanisms are necessary to maximise communication with different families. Our overall attendance rate at Boat Harbour is currently sitting at 88% for the year so far, we aim to have this above 90%.
Attendance at school is essential to help students achieve and be their best. Continuity in their learning and social engagement is essential to their growth.
Going to school every day gives your child every chance to learn and grow, and connect with their mates and teachers. It’s where bright futures start and where they’ll benefit the most.
With an education, anything can happen. By going to school every day, your child will increase their options in a big way.
Please ensure that you inform the school office of any changes to the people you have given permission to collect your child/ren from school. This is essential in helping keep all students safe and in the care of the people you want them to be in.
Straw Bales
Thank you so much to the Roberts Thomson, Sadler and Wade families for donating and transporting the big rectangle bales for our students to play on. There is not a recess or lunch that they are not played on. Girls and Boys from Kinder to Grade 6 are always jumping and playing on them, we are extremely grateful for your generosity, THANK YOU!!

Every school day matters
Welcome back for another school year – we’re excited for what’s
ahead!
Start the year right by making every school day count.
Check out this new video. https://youtu.be/2hSg5_ys-2w
There are lots of things you can do to set your child up for success:
Make sure your child goes to school, every day
Going to school every day gives your child every chance to learn and
grow, and connect with their mates and teachers. It’s where bright
futures start and where they’ll benefit the most.
Get them excited for school
If you show a positive attitude and excitement towards school, your
child will pick up on that.
The most common thing we hear from students, of all ages, is that
school is where they can:
» spend time with their friends and teachers
» create new and fun experiences
» find their interests
» learn new things
» open up their options – for whatever future they want (whether
that’s their dream job or to travel around the world).
Share these positives with your child.
Talk to your child about school
Open up a conversation with your child about what’s happening
at school. It will help you to better support their interests and
confidence in learning. If you show an interest in school, they’ll know
that getting an education is important and valued.
Celebrate the milestones
Big and small! Celebrate milestones such as making it through the first
day or week of school. And remember: all milestones look different. If
it’s a big achievement for your child, it’s important to recognise it.
Set up a time to talk to your child’s teacher or principal
If you’re struggling to get your child to school, help is available.
Please talk to us at school about your situation. We’ll support you, in
whatever way we can.
Know when to seek help
There is no weakness in admitting you need help. If your child has
completely disengaged with school, and not attending at all, there is
support to help you. In the first instance, talk to us at school.

Dixon’s Pharmacy Art Competition
Our students had a fantastic opportunity to showcase their sculptures at the Dixon’s Pharmacy Art Competition. Our display received a highly positive response from the community, providing the public a chance to witness the students’ innovation and creativity.
The students thoroughly enjoyed creating these sculptures, learning various folding techniques and the art of upcycling. They used books discarded by the State Library, which would have otherwise been repulped or thrown away. This project taught students that old books can be reused or repurposed, showing them that creating art can be an inexpensive and resourceful activity. They discovered how to turn discarded materials into wonderful works of art.
Our book sculptures were on display for a week, allowing the community to vote and express their support. Although our sculptures are no longer on display, you can still vote until the end of next week. Please support our school by casting your vote.
In grade 2, we have been looking at procedural texts. We have looked at the language features when writing a good procedural text, providing step by step instructions which are clear and easy to follow. Students have had to follow several different procedures to build their understanding.
The season so far for our 2 BHPS Netball teams has been fantastic.
With many wins under their belts and a whole lot of fun had, they are looking forward to the last half of the winter roster.
The 2 teams have joined forces for training every Wednesday at lunchtime.
Any students who are interested in joining the teams next roster are welcome to go along to training to see what it's all about!
Welcome back to school for Term 3. The year goes so quickly, it’s hard to believe we are in week 3 already. The class has settled well into our routines of spelling, comprehension and maths. We have also had time to fit in some art. These pictures of a village are inspired by folk artist Karla Gerard. We started by drawing as many houses as we could, combining our 3D drawing with pictures of cars, animals and people. Then we used crayons to colour in and washed it over with dye mixed in water. We hope you like them!
On Friday, students from year 6 had the opportunity to listen to and work with Ian and Codey from Sustainable Timber Tasmania as part of Schools Tree Day. They learnt how to use a tree planter and how many trees one person can plant a day, which was up to 3000! The students look forward to returning to the school in years to come to see how the trees they have planted are growing, with some even giving their trees a name.
This term 3D are learning about money. So far this term, we have learnt about different coin values and equivalent money values, as well as making change.
Students have participated in a variety of class games such as ‘Follow Me’ and ‘Bingo’. The most exciting element of our money unit so far has been the class shop. Students have had the opportunity to earn a weekly allowance as well as earn money doing class challenges, games and by going above and beyond in the classroom. When making a purchase, students fill in a receipt form where they calculate the cost of the items as well as change the customer should receive.
Students have enjoyed the real-world application of money and are looking forward to the rest of the unit!
Our Book Week Parade will be held during our Whole School Assembly on Friday 23rd of August, commencing at 9.15am.
Please send your children along in their best book week costumes, all parents & carers are welcome to come along to watch the parade.
Launch into Learning and Pre Kinder
Come along and check out our brand new LIL area which includes a secure courtyard and access to our brand new HUGE sandpit complete with tonka trucks!
Entertainment Book Fundraising
If you are able to offer your time from 8.45 until around midday please let Jackie at the office know :)
The P&F would like to say thank you to all that supported our Bunnings BBQ on the 27th of July.
We managed to sell out of sausages TWICE!
Keep an eye out for our next one later in the year when we will be calling on Grade 5 parents to lend a hand to raise some more money to go towards the 2025 Grade 6 camp.
Please remember to NAME your new uniform items so we are able to return it to it's owner when lost!
What Does the Term Nut Aware Mean?
Nut Aware Schools typically don’t place a ban on nuts, but they do encourage nut alternatives and educate their staff and students. They put an emphasis on preventing cross contamination through proper handling of food and proper hygiene, i.e., washing hands before school, washing hands during lunch, and not sharing food.
Schools that identify themselves as “Nut Aware” will usually ask for the parents of every child, whether they are allergic to nuts or not, to consider peanut and tree nut alternatives when planning individual packed lunches. The same encouragement goes for any snack eaten inside school premises. Typically, if a celebratory treat is sent to school with an intended purpose of being shared, that snack will be required to be free of peanuts or nuts, and also packaged with labeling that confirms the snack is nut free.
