Yesterday, we held the first assembly for this term. Thank you to the 1-2 Quolls for coordinating this assembly, you certainly did yourselves proud. It was terrific to see the amazing work that has been happening in classrooms and I would like to congratulate all students on their achievements thus far this term.
We would like to welcome back to Mrs Jan Radford who will be taking some of our classes for PE on Mondays. This term we also have Miss Elizabeth Snell who is a practising teacher from the Edith Cowan University. Miss Snell will be working with Miss Nicholls and 5-6 Numbats for the remainder of the term.
At BHPS, we are very fortunate to have a wonderful Music program. Our junior and senior choir rehearsals are underway in preparation for the Burnie Eisteddfod and next Thursday we will be having Zeeko from Musica Viva performing. In the coming weeks, Jon Madden will be returning to work with our Early Childhood students. Jon Madden is a musician who makes his own instruments and we look forward to him sharing his creativity and musical talents with our students.
NAPLAN
Congratulations to all Grade 3 and 5 students on completing NAPLAN Online. Students are to be commended for their efforts in completing tests online. We were lucky that we only experienced very minor technical glitches and that our students completed tests successfully. Thank you to our primary teaching staff for their organisation and coordinating of these tests. We look forward to seeing the results in due course.
Asthma and Anaphylaxis
Yesterday, staff attended a training session held by the Asthma Foundation to inform of the correct processes and procedures when assisting students with Asthma and Anaphylaxis. It is a requirement that all students with Asthma and/or Anaphylaxis have a current medical action plan. This a timely reminder to check that your child’s medication is in date and is sent to school daily. Please see our office staff to check and update your child’s medical action plans.

Acting Principal
We now have a new system for volunteering/visiting in our school: when you sign in at the office you will need to collect a BHPS lanyard and place your Working with Vulnerable People (WWVP) card in it for the duration of your visit and return the lanyard to the office when you sign out as you leave.
If you are not wearing a BHPS lanyard displaying your card when you enter the classroom you will be asked by staff to return to the office.
The only times you are not required to sign in and wear your WWVP Card are:
- Dropping off or collecting children
- Attending school community events (assemblies, athletics carnivals, etc.)
- Attending information sessions or parent/teacher interviews, etc.
We thank you for your assistance with this new process
Under the Education Act; the only reasons for authorised absences are:
- Sickness/incapacity
- Medical, legal or related appointments
- A natural disaster or extreme weather that prevents students from safely attending
- Terminal illness of an immediate family member
- Bereavement of a person that the student had a close, significant or family relationship with
- Having witnessed or been subjected to family violence
- Being a participant or official at a recognised National or International sporting, academic or cultural event
- Participation in a recognised learning experience initiated by an independent student or parent, where Principal is of the opinion that the experience or activity has educational value to the student
- Objection, as a matter of conscience, to participation in a particular school activity
- An application for home education being received by the education registrar and provisional registration being granted
All other reasons are considered by the DoE as unauthorised and this is how they will appear on students' absence reports at the end of the year.
If your child is absent from school we ask that you call, email, inbox, SMS or contact us via the website and explain the absence. It is important that you explain the absence to avoid it being marked as unexplained on your child's attendance report.
It is important for parents to know when children can return to school should they become infected with any of the below.
Headlice - Children can return to school as soon as they have been treated. Treatments can be brought at your local pharmacy.
Vomiting/Diarrhoea - It is extremely important that children who have been ill with vomiting or diarrhoea remain off school while symptomatic and for 24 hours after their last episode of vomiting or diarrhoea.
Slapped Cheek/Fifth Disease - Fifth disease is no longer infectious once the rash appears. If you suspect your child may have Fifth disease we ask that you please keep them away from school. Once the rash has come out they are no longer contagious and can return to school.
School Sores/Impetigo - Children diagnosed with impetigo should remain out of school until the sores have stopped blistering or crusting, or until 24 hours after starting appropriate antibiotic treatment.
Chickenpox - Children with chickenpox school be excluded from school until scabs are dry; this is usually five to seven days after the appearance of the rash. Children with spots that are crusted and dried can safely attend school.
Whooping Cough/Pertussis - Children can spread the infection to others through coughing, sneezing and poor hand hygiene. Children with Pertussis should be excluded from school for five days after starting antibiotic treatment.
Scarlet Fever - Children can return to school when they are well and have finished one full day of antibiotic treatment.
Updated Canteen Menu for weeks 5 & 6. Don't forget the Weekly Specials change each week.
Please ensure all orders are in by 9am.
Asthma and Anaphylaxis Information
Important news for parents about the Asthma & Anaphylaxis Schools Program
Students with asthma – no matter how mild
If your child has asthma – even if it is quite mild – please let us know if you haven’t already.
We require an up to date written Asthma Action Plan completed by the students Doctor.
We just completed training with the Asthma Foundation of Tasmania. They told us that there is no way of predicting if a student may suddenly have a major flare up, even if it has not happened before.
So please let us know so we can fulfil our duty of care and keep an eye on them.
Students with anaphylaxis
Please make sure that we have your child’s most recent Anaphylaxis Action Plan.
The plan that we are referring to is the one that has the patient’s photo attached and signed off by a doctor.
According to ASCIA, Australia’s authority on anaphylaxis, the plans should be renewed by your doctor at least once a year.
Any questions on asthma or anaphylaxis
If you have any queries, talk to the Asthma Foundation of Tasmania, the organisers of the Schools Program, by visiting www.asthmatas.org.au or calling 1800 278 462.

Next Thursday, 30th May at 1:30pm BHPS will be having a visit from Zeeko. Students at BHPS have been learning four of Zeeko's songs and are very excited to see them perform these songs.
Zeeko is a trio consisting of three talented and highly sought after musicians. They all perform regularly in a variety of ensembles and styles throughout Australia and internationally. Zeeko's use of largely original material allows them to explore the natural environment and the way various cultures form relationships with it, in a very personal way. Not only is the environment a theme of their show, but many of the instruments featured in it are created from items in our natural and man-made environments.
Last Thursday the 16th May, the Early Childhood classes participated in the Bright Sparks Electrical Program. The electrical program aims at teaching Tasmanian children how to be safe and responsible around electricity. Our students were thoroughly engaged in the program and many students came away repeating key messages such as “water and electricity don’t mix”, “look and follow DANGER signs” and “never play with power points”.
