Assemblies
It was fantastic to celebrate student learning and achievements in our assemblies on Tuesday. First term has flown past, with so many opportunities for our students to extend themselves and develop. The assemblies highlighted students who have showcased our school and Department values of Respect, Aspiration, Courage and Growth. To see students exhibiting these values is demonstrating that students are being their best and giving themselves every opportunity to learn. Thank you to those parents and friends that were able to attend, your children love being able to celebrate achievements with you. The music items shared under the control of Mrs Matic were again a highlight, highlighting the creativity and skills of our students.
Student Free Day
Teachers today worked hard collaboratively to moderate student work. This ensures that there is consistency across classes and schools in the way student work is assessed. This process also helps identify what else teachers can do to support student growth, and informs their teaching practice.
Staffing
Heading into Term 2 there are some staffing changes at Boat Harbour Primary School. We welcome back Mrs Baly who has been away during Term 1. Miss Moore remains on leave in Term 2 meaning that Miss Wescombe will continue to be the classroom teacher on 1-2H. Mrs Sally Wilson joined our staff at the beginning of the year and will continue with us in Term 2. Correspondence about any staffing changes will be sent home during the holidays and an opportunity to meet about any changes early in Term 2.
Safe holidays
It was fantastic to have parents and grandparents in our school helping children create their Easter bonnets. To have partnerships strengthened in this way is a wonderful support for students. We wish everyone a safe and enjoyable Easter and holiday break! Enjoy time with family and we look forward to having everyone return to school at the beginning of Term 2 refreshed and ready for learning.

Focus on Learning
Prep KC & Prep W
As part of our Science Unit, students from Prep KC and Prep W have been busy investigating the needs of living things. Children have had fun searching for living things in the playground, creating animal shelters, growing beans and caring for our class pet ‘Sarah the Stick Insect’.
As part of our learning, students first had to understand the difference between living and non-living things. Together we defined that living things grow and change, have babies (reproduce), move on their own, need oxygen, and food and water. Next, students ventured out to the playground in search of living things.
Back in the classroom students were asked to consider the needs of a familiar animal. Students recorded the needs of their animal and then shared their information with their peers. We soon discovered that different animals had their own unique needs.
As part of our investigation we discussed the importance of shelter. Students identified that shelter protects us from weather conditions such as rain, sun and wind. Next, we watched the movie of The Three Little Pigs and learnt that shelter also protects animals from predators. Students were then asked to use craft materials to create an animal, and shelter for it to live.
Next, we discussed the needs of plants. We identified that plants need water, sunlight (to help make its food) and dirt. To help us understand why plants need sunlight, students in Prep KC participated in a guided science experiment. Together we put a leaf in a jar of water and placed it in the sun. After 2-3 hours, students observed small oxygen bubbles on the leaf. This led into a discussion about the process of photosynthesis.
Lastly students planted a ‘bean seed’. Students were required to care for their plant, as well as observe and record its growth. Some preps discovered that too much water can destroy the seed, whilst not enough water can cause the plant to die.
One of the highlights of our science unit was the discovery of a stick insect outside Prep. Lucy was very excited to share the discovery with her mum, who coincidently knows a lady who breeds stick insects! Mrs Elphinstone brought a baby stick insect into Prep, which we named Sarah. Prep W created a habitat for Sarah, which included eucalyptus leaves to eat, and water to drink. We will continue to observe Sarah’s growth and change throughout the year and hopefully in a year or two Sarah (who doesn’t need a partner to lay eggs) will lay her own eggs (over a 100!).
Some students at our school are allergic to peanuts. We ask that parents are mindful of this when packing their child's lunch box and try to avoid peanuts or products containing peanuts, e.g. peanut butter.
Term 2 commences on Wednesday, 21st April. The last day of Term 2 is Friday, 2nd July.
In the past, purple incident report forms have been sent home with students for every injury they have sustained whilst at school. In future, these forms will be limited to those injuries of a more serious nature, which may also result in a phone call home.
Injuries of a minor or superficial nature, either requiring no treatment or application of (e.g.) antiseptic cream, bandaid or similar dresssing, will be recorded in minor injury logbook by staff for future reference.
