Remembrance Day
Last Wednesday our students demonstrated their respect to those that have served, making sacrifices for us to live the way we do today, by participating in a Remembrance Day service here at school. I could not be more impressed by the respectful manner that every student displayed while taking a moment to reflect on the significance of this day. Grade 6 students, Jed Wilson, Teegan Hyland, Hailey Janssen, Tayla Jackson and Charlie Harris did a magnificent job conducting proceedings with the support of 3-4T. These hosts shared some of the traditions and history of Remembrance Day, highlighting the significance of everyone in our community, recognising and remembering sacrifices that have been made and continue to be made by service men and women. Well done everyone.
Swimming
We have been extremely fortunate to have some lovely weather for our Grade 1 to Grade 5 students to enjoy swimming and water safety programs that started this week. Our Grade 1-2 students are accessing the school pool, while our Grade 3, 4 and 5 students are travelling to the Burnie pool. Providing an opportunity for students to build their awareness and safety around water is critical for them to lead safe lives around different environments, now and into the future. The growth that is demonstrated during the two week swimming program is impressive and we look forward to seeing students enjoy themselves for the rest of the program.
Certificates
It was fantastic to see students from Kinder through to Grade 2 receive recognition for achieving our school and Department values in our morning meeting this week. Having students recognised for being respectful, aspirational, and for demonstrating growth and courage, highlights wonderful things happening across our school. Congratulations to all certificate recipients, and keep up the fantastic work!
Think Wise Waste
Our students were fortunate to have Owen from Think Wise Waste visit and share with all of our Prep to Grade 6 students, different ways to recycle every day. There was some very interesting information shared, including not crushing cans for recycling or not placing bottles or any other recyclable materials in bags to send to recycling. Please chat with your child about what they learnt and how they might like to be proactive.

End of Year Presentation Assemblies
Our end of year presentation assemblies will again be run separately, with Kinder- Prep on Tuesday, 15th December commencing at 11:15am. Grade 1 – 2 will follow after lunch at 1:30pm.
The Grade 3 - 4 presentation assembly will be held on Friday, 11th December commencing at 5:00pm, followed by the Grade 5-6 presentation assembly at 6:45pm. It is expected that the Grade 5-6 assembly will run a little longer than the other assemblies, providing an opportunity for our Grade 6 students to celebrate their primary school years. Students in Grades 3, 4, 5 and 6 who are members of the school band and senior choir are invited to attend both assemblies. The parents of these children will only be able to attend the actual assembly of their child, but are welcome to stay at the school in Minimbah where they can have a coffee to wait for their child to sing or perform.
The assemblies will be live streamed to allow family and friends who cannot be present to tune in and watch students perform. While this is a different format than we would prefer, it is a unique opportunity for every child to be up on stage and present - something we are very much looking forward to.
Each student will be able to have one parent or family member attend their assembly. If you have two children in Grade 1-2, for example, each child can have one parent attend, so both parents will actually be able to attend. Both parents from split families will be permitted to attend the presentation assembly for their child. Please contact the office on 6445 1187 to book your seat.
We understand parking spaces in our car park are limited, and ask visitors to be mindful of where and how they park, and to keep the disabled parking spot near the office accessible should it be needed. The school oval will be open for overflow parking. Please enter through the laneway by the rage cage.
To make sure we are looking after the health and safety of the community, and to comply with COVID-19 Safe Workplace requirements, visitors to our school are asked to complete a Visitor Health Screening Form, covering a standard set of questions about COVID-19 risk. This will allow us to trace visitors who have been at our school should the need arise. Please arrive at school in time to complete this form before the assembly, or you can complete the form electronically prior by clicking on this link.
We look forward to celebrating our students' achievements!
Kinder have been looking at sustainability and keeping our world beautiful, combined with the lifecycle of plants and habitats.
Where does rubbish come from? and What can we do to keep the world clean?
Through observation, inquiry, discussion and investigation, we compared how plastic and paper breakdown in water, and we are observing plants growing in organic matter and in plastic.
Some questions and ideas from the children " When you are at the beach take your rubbish with you" - Hugo and Finn, " Be a rubbish collector like the rubbish truck man, they are important" - Willow, "Pick up rubbish" - Penelope, "Rubbish comes from people" - Hunter, "Do not throw rubbish away" - Oliver, "Why was there so much rubbish in the water?" - Edith, "Why do animals eat the plastic?" - Indigo, "The whales and turtles will eat plastic, it's not their food" - Isabelle.
We created art and the discussions were rich in the topic of keeping the oceans clean and the animals safe. The plasticine creations and bubble art are how children would like to see our oceans, clear and clean of pollution. “Our bubble art represents the water and this is how we want the ocean to look and stay beautiful for all the animals.”
Growing seeds - we know they need water, sun, shade and soil. Children vote the tank with compost and fruit scraps will grow better than the one with the rubbish. Why? “Because it’s not clean and rubbish is pollution and it won’t grow as well.” “The rubbish will suffocate the seeds.”
We will continue to care and observe our seedlings and discuss the changes.
Students in all 3-4 classes embarked on a Science inquiry into making paper planes with the aid of some experts from Questacon in Canberra and their Foldable Flight workshop. Most student had made paper planes before, but have never really considered what makes them go higher, faster, longer. Through the miracle of Zoom, the students learned about scientific concepts of drag, thrust and lift in order to make modifications to their dart planes and gliders. The fun was in the planning and testing of their designs.
In the afternoon, our students tried to break the Guinness World Record of 75 metres, but sadly the wind and rain were against them. We did have some impressive results of 16 metres and above. The students were engaged and learned a lot about planning, observing and persevering. They had a lot of fun too! Here is a video documenting our day of learning all about foldable flight.
Spectators at Swimming Programs
Reminder as per swimming notice sent out last month that due to COVID-19 requirements parents, carers and other visitors will not be able to attend the Grade 3-5 Swimming and Water Safety Program sessions at the Burnie Aquatic Centre.
Parents are, however, permitted to visit the school to watch their children in the pool as they participate in our K-2 Water Skills and Awareness Program. Please sign in at the front office and complete Visitor Health Screening Form, or fill in online via this link before you come.

Prep – Grade 2
The early childhood children started the term working on their manipulative skills, starting with bean bags and then moving onto large balls. They used skills of throwing and catching, dribbling, working co-operatively with a partner and in small groups and then challenging these skills within a game situation.
Grade 3-4
The middle primary grades also worked on their large ball skills - bounce, chest, shoulder passes and dribbling being the main focus. Once working in partner, group or team activities and in a competitive situation, aiming to refine their delivery.
Grade 5-6
The upper primary children explored the sport of Speedball. This is a combination of soccer and handball. Players can choose to play aerial balls or drop the ball to the ground and play soccer rules. In the game situation, if the ball is thrown and bounces on the ground they have the option to continue as soccer or using their feet, lift the ball back up to their hands or a team mates hands. A game that certainly challenged their strategies to achieve success.
