Welcome back!
It has been simply fantastic to see students back at school, enthusiastic to see their friends while at the same time being fresh and prepared for learning. The way students have settled back into routines and learning has allowed everyone to enjoy a smooth, connected and targeted beginning to Term 3.
Hygiene
Hygiene remains a focus across the school, ensuring students remain healthy and working towards keeping our school community safe. What was once considered extra steps in ensuring students are safe and our environment clean are now simply quality hygiene practices as a part of our normal routines.
Moderation
We are extremely fortunate to have staff at Boat Harbour Primary School that are committed to ongoing learning and best practice. Staff continue to work collaboratively to provide opportunities for student learning, updating their skills and knowledge to provide for the needs of every individual student across our school. Last Monday presented an opportunity for teachers to moderate student work, working together to refine assessment practices and discuss the levels achieved through the evidence provided through student work.
Reports
Mid-year reports will be sent home with students next Friday, 7th August. These reports will provide feedback regarding your child’s wellbeing and learning in Maths and English. You will receive feedback regarding their work habits and areas of future focus. As always, we encourage you to discuss your child’s learning with their teacher at any time during the school year.
Assemblies
On Friday, 21st August, we will be holding Kinder – Grade 2, and Grade 3 – 6 assemblies. The Kinder – Grade 2 assembly will be held at 9:50am and the Grade 3 – 6 assembly at 11:05 am.
Due to restrictions to the number of adults we can have in our school hall at one time, two separate assemblies are necessary. There will be a maximum of 60 adults in each assembly. Please RSVP to the school office if you would like to attend – numbers will be capped at 60, with parents required to book their seat if they wish to attend. We acknowledge that some families have students in both assemblies, however we ask that parents only attend one assembly unless numbers permit so that as many families can be present on the day as possible.
There will be assemblies following the same format in the last week of Term 3, Thursday 24th September.
All visitors to the school are required to complete a safety screening form before entering the school, including for assemblies. This assists us in tracing any potential COVID-19 infections.
Grade 5-6G has started the new term running, with groups meeting for spelling and Magic Maths. We have also continued some of our computer based work on Canvas. This has allowed us to cater for a variety of learning styles and encouraged all students to develop independent learning skills.
Students in 5-6N are focused on learning about the 12 and 24 hour time systems and how to convert between them. They have been playing memory games in order to consolidate their knowledge.
Students in 5-6W have been creating collage backgrounds for their mixed media self-portraits.
Our Little Learners and Pre-Kinder programs have re-commenced this week, and will continue each Monday morning between 9.00am - 10.00am. Both programs will run in the Kindergarten, in separate rooms.
In line with Department requirements re: COVID-19, parents/carers will be required to complete a Visitor Health Screening Form each time they attend. Hand sanitiser is available on entry to the building and we ask that this is applied to hands on the way in.
We understand that parking in our car park is at a premium, but ask that you are mindful not to park behind cars in the front row near Performing Arts room, nor park in or block the disabled parking bay.
The Dream Big Art Exhibition is an initiative run by the University of Tasmania and The Advocate newspaper. Students were required to create an artwork inspired by the phrase ‘When I Grow Up’. Boat Harbour Primary school had a number of entries involving a range of career paths, including, Olympic athletes, chefs, motorbike riders and paramedics. Students are to be commended for their fantastic efforts.
Boat Harbour Primary school had a number of students receive prizes for their artwork, which were presented at Monday meeting this week.
Tax invoices for shirts were issued last week. There was an issue with printing the customer reference, required for online payments, on invoices. Please contact the school if you wish to pay by Bpay or at Service Tasmania and a new invoice will be printed with the reference you will need.
Alternatively, there is also the option to pay via Qkr! app, under School Payments, or by cash or EFTPOS at the school office.
Yesterday, Wednesday 29th July, students from Kinder-2 took part in a Personal Safety Education Program, "The Ditto Show". The Ditto Show was fun, engaging and interactive and porvides students with the basic principles of personal safety to enable them to stay safe.
Administration of Student Medication
There have been some changes to the DoE’s administration of student medication procedures and forms.
Should your child have a medical condition that requires prescription medication to be administered at school, it is a requirement that the prescribing doctor, pharmacist or practice nurse complete Authorisation for Administration of Student Medication Form B, and that it is also signed by parent/guardian.
Should your child require non-prescription medication to be administered at school, parents must complete the Authorisation for Administration of Student Medication Form A.
Both forms are available on the DoE website, from the school office, and on Schoolzine.
Parents/guardians must supply the school with medication that is in date, in the original packaging, and, in the case of prescribed medication, in the labelled container dispensed by the pharmacy, along with the relevant completed Authorisation for Administration of Student Medication form for the medication supplied. The school is not permitted to administer medication if these conditions are not met.
If your child requires an asthma puffer, which is either kept at the office or carried with him/her, a completed Authorisation for Administration of Student Medication Form B must be completed and returned to the school, along with a copy of a current medical action plan. This may be either an Asthma Care Plan as approved by Asthma Australia, or Asthma Action Plan generated by your child’s doctor. Please contact the office to check that your child’s plan and medication authorisation form is still current.
School Banking at Boat Harbour Primary School will recommence on Tuesday, 11th August.
Students are to place their bank books in their class banking bag each Tuesday, to be delivered to the office at 9.00am. They will be returned to class after processing by Wednesday afternoon.
Boat Harbour Primary School’s canteen is run by a Canteen Supervisor, Sue Bowers, with help from volunteers. The canteen operates from Wednesday to Friday. We are focused on providing healthy nourishing food for students and staff, and though some items are sourced from suppliers accredited with the Tasmanian School Canteen Association Inc., they are mostly made and prepared within the school canteen. We aim to use locally grown and seasonal vegetables and fruit as much as possible, and also to introduce foods from other cultures. We can also provide for special dietary requirements on request – e.g. gluten free, dairy free, vegetarian and vegan.
Orders are to be written on a paper bag or envelope with your child’s name, class and money enclosed, or ordered via the Qkr! app (download instructions available from the office) and should be submitted by 9 a.m. every canteen morning. Every week we offer specials on Wednesday and Thursday, and you will find these advertised in the school newsletter. Basic menus are available online or from the school office, and it is a good idea to have this printed out and attached to the fridge.
Our canteen relies on the support of volunteers. Volunteers are the canteen’s most precious resource. With plenty of volunteers, the canteen has a good recipe for producing the best quality food for students and staff, as well as a healthy income for the school.
However, there are also many benefits to volunteers from working in the canteen.
Volunteers can:
- make new friends, gain personal growth and satisfaction
- improve or learn new skills for employment, add to a resume or gain a reference
- contribute to the school community (e.g. raise funds) – after all, in most cases, volunteers will have a child or children at the school
- even use volunteer hours in the canteen towards work for the dole or community work activities for those in receipt of income support from the government
Volunteers in the canteen do not need to be just mums – dads, grandparents, older brothers or sisters, aunts, uncles or friends are also most welcome.
There are many benefits to volunteering! You will make new friends,
you can improve or learn new skills, you will
definitely have a few laughs with a great bunch of people, and most
important of all, you will be doing something very worthwhile for your
school community. It is impossible to put a price on the value of the work
that you do for us.
THANK YOU
If you are interested in joining our band of canteen workers, contact Liz Knight or Sue Bowers. All are welcome.

Good luck for this week's game in Penguin.
To make sure we are looking after the health and safety of the community, and to comply with COVID-19 Safe Workplace requirements, visitors to our school are asked to complete a Visitor Health Screening Form, covering a standard set of questions about COVID-19 risk, when they sign in at the office. This will allow us to trace visitors who have been at our school should the need arise.
Well done to last term's class representatives for SRC. Thank you for stepping up and extending your role over 2 terms due to unforeseen circumstances.
I look forward to working with our Term 3 SRC Representatives. Congratulations to Bligh, Cooper, Banjarra, Lincoln, Ari and Brenna who will be representing their classes this term.
I look forward to working with these students and the executive for Term 3.
