Reading
Each Monday morning we hold a short whole school morning meeting to set ourselves up for the week, share information, highlight a focus for the week and most importantly, celebrate different achievements across the school. It is fantastic to see at each morning meeting students recognised for extra reading at home. Achieving the different reading rules levels showcases the time and effort students and families are investing in reading and supporting student learning. Keep up the fantastic effort!
Athletics
Jake and Harry recently represented Boat Harbour Primary School as members of the North West team at the State Athletics Carnival held in Launceston. Both boys did a fantastic job demonstrating their determination and courage to try their best in a new environment. Congratulations Harry on winning the 800m and placing 3rd in the 400m. In another fantastic effort, Jake came 4th in the 400m. Both boys have been training hard, and these results are reward for your effort. Well done on your achievements boys and congratulations for representing our school and yourselves in such an impressive manner!
Assembly
Next Friday 28th May we will be holding our mid-term assemblies. The K – 2 assembly will be held at 11:15am in the school hall, and the Grade 3 – 6 assembly will be held at 1:30pm. We look forward to seeing you there.
Cold weather
As the cold weather seems to have settled in for the Autumn/Winter period, we are encouraging students to wear their jumpers and warm school uniform to help stay healthy. No hats are required during Term 2 and 3, however students are certainly welcome to wear them if they wish.
Sickness
There has been a significant amount of sickness at school over the past few weeks. This includes flu symptoms and students vomiting. To help prevent the cycle of germs and sickness being spread, we encourage parents to keep students home until they are well. We thank you for helping keep our school community healthy.
Peter Brown
Principal
Many of you would be aware that Mrs Baker is expecting the arrival of her baby during Term 2. We would like to thank Mrs Baker for being our Kinder teacher until this stage of the school year and wish her all the best with her growing family. We look forward to meeting your new little one, Mrs Baker!
It is exciting to have Ms Zacs as the Kinder teacher moving forward as she is familiar with the Kinder space and the students. Ms Zacs has been a relief teacher at our school for a number of years providing her with a clear understanding of all aspects of Boat Harbour Primary School.
4-5KB
In recent weeks our work in English has involved developing an understanding of character traits – in particular, looking past ‘appearances’ and thinking about what characters are like on the ‘inside’. We have thought about these traits in relation to characters in our Guided Reading texts, learned how to spell some adjectives to describe a character and also how to describe our own character traits in a poem. We are now learning how to use a wider range of these descriptive words to describe characters in our stories.
3-4E & 3-4EM
The Heat is On
This term in Science 3-4 E and 3-4 EM have been investigating heat – what it is, how it is made, how it moves and why it’s important in our everyday lives.
Our first investigation involved dropping food dye into two glasses of water – one hot water and the other cold. Students were introduced to the idea of predicting what might happen, observing what happened, and then working out how heat effected the outcome of the experiment. Some of the hypothesis the students came up with:
- “I predict that the hot and cold water will be coloured” -Jazeps
- “If you put red food dye in hot water the water will turn cold because red is a hot colour” -Kristy
- “The food colour when added to the cold water will travel faster than in the hot water because the hot water is more dense” -Charlotte
- “that the hot water will produce bubbles and the cold water won’t change except the colour” -Ari
3-4T
3-4T have been working on our scientific skills. We have been exploring 'force and energy' and how we can use these to help propel our 'birds' further. The students focussed on testing, observing, measuring, and then refining their catapults to make the counters go further forward to knock over our towers. It was a lot of fun!
Congratulations to those students in Grades 3 -6 who have been selected to participate in the NWPSSA Inter Primary Cross Country to be held on Wednesday, 2nd June at the Ulverstone Football Ground and surrounding Fairway Park area.
As there are COVID-19 restrictions of 1000 people at an outdoor venue (this includes students, staff and officials), only one spectator per competing student is allowed to attend the Grade 3-4 / Grade 5-6 session that their child is competing in. This is a fair way of allowing our fabulous NW students the opportunity to have at least ONE person able to see them compete. This is a ticketed event - please contact the school office for a free spectator ticket (sorry, NO ticket NO entry).
The spectator entrance and exit gate will be via the Victoria Street football club carpark entrance. ALL spectators must check-in using the CHECK-IN APP or sign in using the sheets provided to assist with COVID tracing. Please remember to use hand sanitisers and practise social distancing.
Information letters have been sent home with all students selected to compete - reminder that permission forms are due back at school by this Monday, 24th May.
Recently, we have had an increase of illnesses including gastro, coughs, colds and viruses. It is important that if your child is unwell that they are kept at home until symptoms subside or they get the all clear from your local GP. Below is some important information regarding gastro.
What is winter vomiting (gastro) disease?
A virus known as norovirus causes winter vomiting disease. The virus usually causes short-lasting outbreaks but is very contagious. The infection has caused many outbreaks in the community and in health care settings in recent years.
What are the symptoms of winter vomiting disease?
Symptoms can include:
- Nausea (often sudden onset)
- Vomiting (often projectile)
- Crampy abdominal pain
- Watery diarrhoea
- High temperature chills and muscle aches.
Symptoms begin around 12 to 48 hours after becoming infected. The illness is usually brief, with symptoms lasting only about 1-2 days. However, illness may be prolonged in some people (usually the very young or elderly). In more severe cases it may cause dehydration and require hospital treatment. If you have any specific concerns about your child you should contact your GP.
How is winter vomiting disease spread?
People can become infected with the virus in several ways, including:
- Contact with an infected person, especially contact with vomit or faeces.
- Contact with contaminated surfaces or objects and then touching eyes, nose or mouth.
- Consuming contaminated food or water.
What can be done to prevent infection?
It is often impossible to prevent infection; however, taking good hygiene measures around someone who is infected can decrease your chance of getting infected.
- Wash hands frequently including before eating or preparing food and after toilet use.
- Thoroughly clean and disinfect contaminated surfaces immediately after an episode of vomiting or diarrhoea by using a bleach-based household cleaner.
- Flush or discard any vomit and/or faeces in the toilet and make sure that the surrounding area is kept clean.
Can my child stay in school?
It is extremely important that people who have been ill with vomiting or diarrhoea should remain off school or work while symptomatic and for 24 hours after their last episode of vomiting or diarrhoea.
