Assembly
It was fantastic to be able to come together and celebrate student learning and achievements last week in our assemblies. Thank you to everyone that attended, our students love performing in front of you and are proud to share different aspects of their school life with family and friends. Your understanding of the restrictions we need to adhere to enabled us to still hold these events, with the Kinder to Grade 2 and Grade 3 to Grade 6 format being something that will continue into the foreseeable future. Congratulations to all certificate recipients and to both choirs for your excellent performances. We look forward to celebrating learning at Boat Harbour Primary School with you at our next assembly on Thursday, 17 September.
Kinder enrolments
Kinder enrolments are open for 2021. Enrolment forms are available at the school office or from Pre-Kinder sessions that are held each Monday morning in the Kinder. If you are interested in enrolling your child, please do not hesitate to contact the school to visit or for a chat about any aspect of the school. We look forward to forming another fantastic group of children and supporting them as they begin their first formal year of schooling in 2021.

1-2BK & 1-2EE
Children in 1-2BK and 1-2EE were given the opportunity to engage in a teacher-led demonstration called ‘Gumnuts to Buttons’, where the history of Tasmanian Aboriginals was shared in a modified, child-friendly manner. We also came together for an inquiry afternoon, and the children delighted in hands-on experiences that celebrated the culture and art of Tasmanian Aboriginals.
Following on from ‘Gumnuts to Buttons’, the children have become quite the experts at speaking in the most recent Tasmanian Aboriginal language ‘palawa kani’, which is also the only one spoken here in lutruwita (Tasmania) today.
In the past, there were 9 language regions in lutruwita classed as ‘mobs’. Children looked at what made their own region unique, thinking about the significant features within their local area. They worked co-operatively to design a flag which represented their community, or as the children now enjoy referring to them as, their ‘mob’.
Through these experiences, children have extended their awareness and perspectives around Tasmanian Aboriginal history, language and culture.
1-2H
In Science, students in 1-2H have worked together to investigate how everyday materials can change in a variety of ways. They have explored the effects of things being mixed together and looked at irreversible and reversible changes. A range of different experiments have been conducted from melting different types of chocolate to trying to create explosive reactions in the sandpit.
In Maths, we have been learning about fractions while exploring the outdoors in this spectacular winter weather and by also cooking up a storm.

New Registration to Work with Vulnerable People Policy and Procedures
The Department is committed to ensuring the safety and wellbeing of children and other vulnerable people on DoE premises, therefore, in line with the Registration to Work with Vulnerable People Policy, all employees, volunteers, contractors and external providers who work or attend a DoE worksite in their respective capacity must hold current RWVP.
Requirements for volunteers:
- Apply for and/or renew their RWVP when required and to provide proof of that RWVP to the School Business Manager (SBM) at the office.
- Nominate Department of Education and volunteer locations within the existing employment or volunteer section of their RWVP application.
- Notify the Principal or SBM immediately when an application or renewal is rejected.
- Inform the Principal or SBM if there is a change to their background or criminal history that may affect their registration, such as:
# Criminal record/charge
# Negative notice
# Suspended registration; or
# Conditional registration (imposed by Registrar).
- Notify the Principal or SBM immediately when they become aware of a proposed negative notice and are not to be involved in a child related service until the outcome of the notification is known.
- Notify the Principal or SBM immediately they become aware that RWVP will be revoked.
All volunteers coming onsite are to complete the Visitor/Volunteer logbook at the office prior to proceeding into our school. Please make sure you have your RWVP card whenever you visit the school, as office staff are required to check the current status of all registrations on the Department of Justice website at each visit.
The requirement for RWVP does not apply to parents/guardians/relatives in the following situations:
- Dropping off or collecting children, including short periods of settling children in class where the teacher is present.
- Attending school community events (assemblies, school sports carnivals, plays and concerts) where they are not direct participants and/or do not assist in the organisation or execution of these events.
- Attending school for a parent information evening, parent/teacher interviews or to hear a guest speaker.
To make sure we are looking after the health and safety of the community, and to comply with COVID-19 Safe Workplace requirements, visitors to our school are asked to complete a Visitor Health Screening Form, covering a standard set of questions about COVID-19 risk. This can be completed prior to your visit by following the link below to an electronic version of the form, or on paper copy when signing in at the office. This will allow us to trace visitors who have been at our school should the need arise.
