1-2 Celebrations

1-2BK & 1-2EE
Children in 1-2BK and 1-2EE were given the opportunity to engage in a teacher-led demonstration called ‘Gumnuts to Buttons’, where the history of Tasmanian Aboriginals was shared in a modified, child-friendly manner. We also came together for an inquiry afternoon, and the children delighted in hands-on experiences that celebrated the culture and art of Tasmanian Aboriginals.

Following on from ‘Gumnuts to Buttons’, the children have become quite the experts at speaking in the most recent Tasmanian Aboriginal language ‘palawa kani’, which is also the only one spoken here in lutruwita (Tasmania) today.

In the past, there were 9 language regions in lutruwita classed as ‘mobs’. Children looked at what made their own region unique, thinking about the significant features within their local area. They worked co-operatively to design a flag which represented their community, or as the children now enjoy referring to them as, their ‘mob’.

Through these experiences, children have extended their awareness and perspectives around Tasmanian Aboriginal history, language and culture.

1-2H
In Science, students in 1-2H have worked together to investigate how everyday materials can change in a variety of ways. They have explored the effects of things being mixed together and looked at irreversible and reversible changes. A range of different experiments have been conducted from melting different types of chocolate to trying to create explosive reactions in the sandpit.

In Maths, we have been learning about fractions while exploring the outdoors in this spectacular winter weather and by also cooking up a storm.
