I am extremely grateful that we thrive in a community that values and embraces reading. With every opportunity to read our children increase their ability to access information and stories and the ability to open the world for themselves. Thank you for the additional reading you encourage and support at home, the impact this has on your child’s decoding, fluency and comprehension is significant. Please keep encouraging reading at home for all ages, Kinder to Grade 6. If this is sometimes a bit of a grind at home, always chat with your child’s teacher to discuss strategies to make it a little easier.
The recent book fair was a massive success! Collectively 200+ books were purchased, and this also raised enough money for the school to purchase an additional 100+ books. Having this many extra books available to students and in their hands is simply wonderful.
Grade 6 Camp
Last week our Grade 6 students went on their camp. Students stayed for two nights at the Hagley School farm, and in Hobart for two nights. They accessed a huge range of activities and were extremely busy for the week. I was incredibly impressed with the manner our students conducted themselves, with teachers and our school often contacted by facilitators of activities and members of the community, complimenting our students on their behaviour, manners and respect. Please take the opportunity to discuss the camp with Grade 6 students and hear about their busy week.
A massive thank you to staff who gave up their time to make this week happen. The organisation necessary is time consuming, let alone putting your own lives on hold for the week. Staff recognise the magnitude camp can have on each student and for different reasons. We are grateful that our Grade 6 students have this opportunity.
Lego
Our students have recently designed incredible lego creations through drawing. The meticulous detail that is evident highlights the many creative minds across our school. I can’t wait to see what students actually make when it is time to present their lego master pieces!
School Association Nominations
Coming home next week is a nomination form for our Association. If you would like to be a voice on the School Association and assist in the direction of Boat Harbour Primary School, then please nominate for a position on the Association. We are hoping to form a group of people with varying thoughts on a range of topics across our school. The Association meets only twice each term. We look forward to respectufully debating pathways for our school's future.
Cross Country
Last week our Grade 3 – 6 representatives travelled to Ulverstone to compete in the North West Cross Country Championship.

This term in 3D, we have been learning different addition strategies to correctly and efficiently solve sums contain 3, 4 and 5 digit numbers. Students have really enjoyed practicing and reviewing strategies as well as applying them to larger numbers.
“My favourite strategy is the bridge to 10 strategy.” – Ari
“I like column strategy because I can add the two numbers together easily” – Zoe
“I like them all. I find them all fun.” – Hunter
“My favourite strategy is split strategy because I think it’s the most efficient way to solve 4 and 5 digit sums.” – Atreyu
“Column strategy. It’s easy and fast and I only just learnt it this year” - Ashton
We have been learning about solids and liquids in Science. We have been learning how a solid can change to a liquid through the process of melting. We investigated the melting process by completing two experiments using ice. One experiment involved solid ice, crushed ice and ice with salt to see which would melt the quickest. The other experiment involved different types of objects: a coin, a candle, a square of chocolate and an ice cube. We tested to see which item would melt. We observed the changes every 20 minutes for an hour. The ice melted and the chocolate started to melt.
Here are some of our thoughts:
“The crushed ice melted the quickest” – Ezra.
“The smaller pieces of the crushed ice make water and the water would make the other chunks easily melt” – Finnian.
“The results were unexpected and the experiment was really fun and we all enjoyed it” -Lucy.
“The ice melted the quickest in the second experiment because the atoms were getting warmer and bouncing off each other” -Anson.
“I loved writing the results on the observation sheet and I loved learning about the atoms and temperatures that things had to be at to melt” -Lachie
“I liked when we had to make a prediction” -Obie.
In 4G we have completed lots of Art activities this year. Our Tile Art was a big hit at the Wynyard Show and some members of our class won a variety of awards.
These pictures of Ned Kelly are based on paintings by Sidney Nolan. We began by painting the background and then waited a day until the paint dried. Then we had to draw and cut out a silhouette of Ned Kelly and some trees or a hut.
We hope you like them.
Enhancing Handwriting Through Drawing Techniques in 4D
This term, our students have been diving into various drawing techniques, discovering the intricacies of both the medium and the methods of using them. By experimenting with different pencil grips and observing the effects, they've not only honed their drawing skills but also significantly improved their handwriting.
One key aspect of their learning has been understanding how the way they hold a pencil can influence their control and precision. Students have been practicing drawing with varying pressures, learning to apply both light and firm strokes. This practice translates directly to handwriting, making it a smoother and less strenuous task.
Additionally, we've introduced the concept of connected drawing, where students collaborate by linking their drawings to those of their peers. This exercise fosters a sense of community and teamwork, as they collectively create vibrant landscapes filled with colour and shapes. The collaborative nature of this activity not only enhances their artistic abilities but also builds a harmonious environment in the classroom.

Congratulations to our year 3-5 NWPSSA Cross Country representatives who ran at Ulverstone on Wednesday. We were very proud to see our team displaying enormous courage and embracing the opportunity they had to run at an interschool level. We are proud of the team spirit they showed on the day, and we loved seeing them fist pump and high five each other at the end of their races. Well done everyone and a special congratulations to Tarik (year 5 Boys) who got a win in his race. A massive effort
We do love a bit of sport here at BHPS with a School Footy team of 20+ keen players and 2 Saturday Netball teams!
Words from Netta Coach Jackie B.
Last week we defeated our week 1 adversaries 7 goals to 6, in week 1 we were a player down and they wiped the floor with us.
What a comeback and a huge measure of growth and development for the individual players as well as us as a team! WooHoo!
Words from Netball coach Crystal.
What an incredible start to the 2024 Netball Season. With the season commencing at the start of May, our team have worked very hard to build upon their skills and it shows every week. Their team work improves with every game.
School Values shine through with each player showing Responsibility for themselves and their actions, the Courage it takes to play each week, the Growth we see in each player, the Connection that is being formed between players, and the Respect they show each other, the opposing team and the umpires.
Well done to all our players and I look forward to seeing continued improvement for the remainder of the season.
Games are played at the Burnie Netball Courts every Saturday morning if anyone would like to come along and support us!
