P-1S & P-1C
The Prep-1 classes have been learning to recognise how authors develop narratives. We have read lots of narratives and discussed the different parts they need as well as the author’s purpose. In Prep-1S we read The Gruffalo by Julia Donaldson and Axle Scheffler and drew the characters, setting, beginning, middle and end. In Prep-1C we read The Three Billy Goats Gruff and acted out the story using our own character puppets and bridge setting. Together, we read a fun story on Pirate Day called Captain Crabclaw’s Crew and then completed a life-size story map to identify the parts of the story.

We have also started our new spelling program this term, learning new ways to look at spelling words and understand their meaning. On Pirate Day both Prep-1 classes went outside and wrote our words in chalk on the basketball court and with paintbrushes and water on the boats in the playground.

In Maths we have been investigating measurement and the methods we can use to measure and compare lengths of different objects. We have been discussing the Mathematical language of measurement such as short, long and tall and have used informal units such as blocks and our hands and feet to measure objects in the classroom. Last week Prep-1S estimated the lengths of images and then used picture rulers to measure them and record our answers. Prep-1C have explored many hands-on measuring tools when comparing and ordering objects, but our favourite activity by far was when Mrs Gilleece asked us to estimate which animal we thought we were as tall (or as short) as. We are proud to say that many of us are as tall as a lion!
