Student Illness

Children who are unwell should be at home with someone who can care for them.  Sometimes it may be necessary for children to be collected from school if they become sick or injured.  For this reason, it is important that the office has up-to-date details of where to contact parents or designated emergency contacts if parents are not available.  Should there be changes through the year, it is important that you let us know.

It is important for parents to know when children can return to school should they become infected with any of the below.

Headlice - Children can return to school as soon as they have been treated. Treatments can be brought at your local pharmacy.

Vomiting/Diarrhoea - It is extremely important that children who have been ill with vomiting or diarrhoea remain off school while symptomatic and for 24 hours after their last episode of vomiting or diarrhoea.

Slapped Cheek/Fifth Disease - Fifth disease is no longer infectious once the rash appears. If you suspect your child may have Fifth disease we ask that you please keep them away from school.  Once the rash has come out they are no longer contagious and can return to school.

School Sores/Impetigo - Children diagnosed with impetigo should remain out of school until the sores have stopped blistering or crusting, or until 24 hours after starting appropriate antibiotic treatment.

Chickenpox - Children with chickenpox school be excluded from school until scabs are dry; this is usually five to seven days after the appearance of the rash. Children with spots that are crusted and dried can safely attend school.

Whooping Cough/Pertussis - Children can spread the infection to others through coughing, sneezing and poor hand hygiene. Children with Pertussis should be excluded from school for five days after starting antibiotic treatment.

Scarlet Fever - Children can return to school when they are well and have finished one full day of antibiotic treatment.
