Grade 1-2 Excursion to Highfield
On Tuesday 29th October, 1-2 Bilbies, 1-2 Quolls and 1-2 Koalas went on an excursion to visit Highfield House in Stanley. I learnt that people who worked for the Van Diemens Land Company lived here. I found out that only the adults could eat meals at the big dining table. The children were only allowed to eat in the dining room when it was a special occasion like their birthday or Christmas. There were no telephones or computers to communicate with people in other countries, so they had to write a letter using a quill. The letter was then sent on a boat and would take 4 to 6 months to arrive. They would write out a second copy so they could remember what message they sent in the first letter. Then they had to wait a long time to get a reply.
After lunch, we all walked up to the top of the Stanley Nut. It was really steep and hot. Everyone loved looking at the view from the top. We had a great day!
