Learning
A highlight of the beginning of the school year has been the teaching and learning that has occurred since the first week of the 2021 school year. I am continually impressed by the positive attitude from students and the determination of staff to do whatever they can to support the learning of all students across our school. The Boat Harbour Primary School community is rich with people that are passionate about education and an eager for us all to be doing whatever we can to help students be the best they can be. From this fantastic start to the school year I am excited by what the rest of the school year will bring.
Athletics Carnival
Our school Athletics carnival is always a highlight of the school year! All parents and friends are welcome to come and support students as they try their best at a variety of events on the day. This day is about kids having fun and trying their best, encouraging each other and showcasing their sportsmanship. Students that achieve highly in Grades 3 – 6 on the day will represent BHPS at the North West Athletics Carnival held in Penguin in March.

Meet the Teacher Evening & BBQ
Teachers are looking forward to class meetings in week 4, Wednesday 24th February, to meet with parents to share about routines and expectations in 2021. For some it is the first time that you have been able to touch base with your child’s teacher. We understand that these scheduled times may not suit everyone, however an information sheet from each class will be sent home with students that will include the things shared at the meeting.
Please also feel welcome to call the school on (03) 6445 1187 to arrange a meeting or time to chat with your child’s teacher if you require further information or were unable to attend this meeting to share anything about your child.
Class Meetings Timetable - Wednesday, 24th February
3:30pm Kinder
4:00pm Prep
4:30pm Grade 1-2
5:00pm Grade 3-4 & 4-5
5:30pm Grade 5-6
There will be a BBQ (hamburgers and sausages) available for students and parents to access during the meeting times, at no cost.
In 3-4, we are working on a collaborative art project to display in the hallway outside of our classroom. We have learned about tonal scales and contrasting colours by painting our strips to make our feathers. Over the top, we have produced designs to highlight the patterns in our feathers. The students can't wait for the 'big reveal' next week for the 'Meet the Teacher' evening. Bring your cameras!
Reminder that if your child/ren have changes to their end of day arrangements, the school needs to be notified.
Please contact the school office via phone, school mobile, email or Schoolzine message - we will confirm that we received the message.
Alternatively, if a note is sent with your child, please ensure it includes the date on the note, and that your child passes it to the office.
Your support and assistance with this ensures buses leave on time, rather than being delayed due to staff needing to clarify student end of day arrangements.
Paper Batik
Our focus for Visual Art has been to explore two different techniques with crayons and coloured dyes. The students have learned how to imitate the fabric decorating technique called batik. This process uses similar techniques to traditional batik on fabric, just replacing the cloth with paper. The process uses crayons to draw and colour a design on paper that is then crumpled into a ball to create the crackling that is featured in real batik. Finally, dye is painted over the image. The wax resists the dye, but seeps into the crackled lines.
Secondly, the students have explored a resist dying technique where an image is created with crayon and dye is applied over the wax crayon.
The BHPS Athletics Carnival will take place, weather permitting, next Thursday, 25th February. In the event of poor weather, it will be postponed until Thursday, 4th March.
Children will need to have appropriate clothing for hot and cold weather including a sun hat and plenty of water to drink. Parents and friends are welcome to come and join us and help cheer house teams in some friendly competition, starting at 9.30 am on the school grounds. Parents are reminded to maintain social distance and to sign in at the result scoring desk on the oval.
Students will be sitting with their own team. Coolongatta – Blue, Illawarra – red, Imbru – yellow. If children could wear a top or coloured ribbon of their team, this would assist with marshalling, other children identifying their own team members and making the recording of results much easier.
As this is NOT a school day for all Kinder students, those children at school will be brought to the oval by Mrs. Baker, while parents of other Kinder children are most welcome to bring their child to join in some events, but will need to stay and supervise their own child. These events will occur between 10.30am and 12.30pm.
Parking will be available around the school oval - entry at the end of Dobson's Lane. There will be some areas unavailable - follow the No Parking signs. Please don't park outside the Fire Station - this needs to be kept clear at all times.

Our School Canteen provides a range of healthy hot foods, salads and snacks on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays each week. The majority of the foods are prepared on site - minimal pre-packaged food is on the menu. Along with the normal menu, different specials are offered weekly - main and dessert on Thursday, muffin/treat Wednesday - Friday, and, in Term 1, Sushi on Wednesday.
To be able to provide this range each week, our Canteen Supervisor, Susan Bowers, needs to have two helpers each day. We are fortunate to have two community members who have made themselves available regularly, and several parents who help out on a roster, but we really need some more parent helpers to join the happy team!
If you are available on Wednesdays, Thursdays or Fridays, even if only for a couple of hours, please contact the school office to pass on your details to the Canteen Supervisor.
It is a requirement that all volunteers have current Registration to Work with Vulnerable People (RWVP) - if you would like to help, but haven't as yet registered, please click on this link for instructions for doing this, or contact the school office for more information.

The BHPS School Association AGM will be held on Tuesday, 30th March 2021. Members of the School Association are nominated and hold their position for two years. Each year the two year cycle finishes for some members, creating vacant positions to be filled.
This year there will be five parent member vacancies to be filled, along with one staff member position. If you are interested in filling one of the parent positions, please complete the nomination form attached or collect a paper copy from the office and return to the school office by 3.00pm on Tuesday, 16th March 2021.
Being a member of the School Association is an excellent way to contribute to the administrative functions and accountabilities of our school. If you would like further information about the Association please contact one of the members to ask any questions.
Student Council purchased a Heartstart Defibrillator and CardiAct AED cabinet late last year with funds they had raised through the year along with donations from the Wynyard Lions Club, Lions Club of Rocky Cape and a school family.
The cabinet has now been installed on the wall by the front door to the school office, where the defibrillator may be accessed in case of emergency.
Our School Association fundraising group is planning activities to raise funds to continue to support our school with the purchase of new resources and financial assistance for student activities. Approximately $3200 has been pledged to purchase decodable readers for Prep - Grade 2 students, along with a significant contribution towards the Grade 6 trip this year should it be able to go ahead. Funds are also being used to purchase butter and spreads for the Breakfast Club, which has been fortunate to have had bread supplied through Wynyard IGA, along with fruit from Young's Vegie Shed. Unfortunately, Young's Vegie Shed is unable to continue to assist in this way, and we thank those parents who have already been in touch to offer their fruit for this program.
If you are unable to be involved and assist the fundraising group with their activities but would like to be able to make a contribution, you are welcome to make a donation to the School Association. This can be done on Qkr! under School Payments - either Breakfast Club Donation (increments of $5) or select one of the options under School Association Contribution. Options include $10 towards Reading Books or a general donation of either $10 or an amount of your choosing.
The fundraising group will be holding an Easter Raffle and are seeking your support to put together some Easter baskets as prizes. We'd really appreciate it if you would be able to donate an Easter themed item - eggs, bunnies, toys or craft.
Collection boxes will be in the office from Monday, 22nd February. More details to follow about the raffle.
