Class Meetings
It was fantastic to have so many parents attend Class Meetings across the school yesterday afternoon. These meetings were an opportunity to discuss class routines and expectations. We recognise the importance of working in partnership with parents to maximise the learning and overall development and wellbeing of your child. Please always feel welcome to arrange a time with your child’s teacher to catch up and discuss their learning, including ways that we can support them together.
Grade 6 Camp
Last week our Grade 6 students went on their camp to Melbourne and Canberra. It is with pleasure, but absolutely no surprise, that I am able to report that all students were excellent ambassadors for our school, consistently demonstrating an excellent, respectful attitude everywhere we visited. From the moment students boarded the Spirit of Tasmania on Monday until landing safely in Launceston on the Sunday, students were caring towards each other and embraced every opportunity they were presented with. After spending one night in Melbourne before heading to Canberra for four nights, students – and staff, were pretty happy to have Monday as a public holiday to recuperate. A massive thank you to Mrs Jules Wilson, Mrs Wilkinson, Miss Nicholls, Mr Groenewege, Mr Paul Hancock and Mrs Knight for pulling the camp together and making this an extremely valuable and exciting learning experience for these students. Please feel welcome to chat with our Grade 6 students to hear firsthand about their experience.
Thank you to the BHPS Parents & Friends for helping fund the school trip, it simply could not go ahead without your support. The Australian Government recognises the importance of all young Australians being able to visit the national capital as part of their Civics and Citizen education. Students participated in a variety of education programs with a focus on Australia’s history, culture, heritage and democracy. To assist families in meeting the cost of the excursion the Australian Government contributed $200 per student ($7,000 in total) under the Parliament and Civics Education Rebate program towards those costs. The rebate is paid directly to the school upon the completion of the excursion.
Athletics
The Boat Harbour Primary School Athletics carnival is always one of the best days on the school calendar. It is provides an opportunity for parents and grandparents to come together and share a day with students as they try their best and work together. Our carnival is strongly focussed around students participating and having a go, even when running might not be their strength. A highlight of the day is the way students support and encourage each other, work together, and celebrate with and for each other. Students feel valued, connected and loved when they have someone close to them visit the school to support and encourage them. I understand that people lead busy lives, but to those people that were able to come along and support students and share the day, thank you. A special thank you to Mrs Hutchison, Mrs Evans and Mrs and Mr Allen for your hard work and preparation to ensure the success of the carnival. Congratulations Illawara for being the winning house on the day!
34 students that achieved highly at our carnival were selected to form the BHPS athletics team to travel to the Penguin athletics centre yesterday to compete in the NWSSSA Athletics Carnival. Over 1000 Grade 3 – 6 students came together to put their best foot forward to gain selection in the NW team to participate in the State Championships later in the year. Against strong opposition, our students competed bravely, with some excellent achievements. From the long distance 800m through to the 75m sprints, every member of the BHPS team put in their best effort and we are so proud of you!
Students that came 1st or 2nd in the semi-finals yesterday will compete next Tuesday afternoon in the Twilight finals carnival held in Penguin. Congratulations to Sophie who will compete in the Grade 5 Girls 400m final, and to Teegan for reaching the Grade 6 Girls 100m and 400m finals. Congratulations girls and all the best in the finals next week.
Progress Reports
Progress reports will be sent home on Friday 20th March. These reports are designed to give parents a snapshot of how their child has settled into the 2020 school year. The reports include a comment from your child’s teacher and a tick-a-box section providing different elements of feedback.
North Melbourne AFL Clinic
44 Grade 5 and 6 students had the opportunity to access an AFL clinic hosted by the North Melbourne Football Club and AFL Tasmania yesterday. This is a chance for some students to try something new and for others to refine some already developing skills. A key message from the AFL players is to have fun while playing sport and enjoy playing with your friends. They also gave some tips to students that were eager to pursue their dreams and how to achieve their goals.
School Association Nominations
School Association nominations close tomorrow, Friday 13th March 2020 at 4.00pm.
Nomination forms can be collected from the office.
Our Athletics Carnival on Friday 28th March was a brilliant day. The children put in a very full day, with many opportunities to be challenged, and in return to develop their level of perseverance and resilience.
Thank you to the many family members that came along to support the children; it certainly added to the atmosphere of the day and was appreciated by the students and staff. The camaraderie amongst students, staff and families was wonderful, and we were all entertained by Tash Turner’s fantastic effort on the microphone.
It was a very closely fought tussle between all the houses; with Illawarra enjoying success.

Co-ordinators
Nominations were called for Chairperson and Vice-Chairperson for the Fundraising Committee on 4th March. At the same time there were nominations called for parent and staff representatives for the School Association.
There seems to have been some confusion around nominations between these two committees. Due to this confusion, nominations for both committees will be accepted until tomorrow, 13th March, 2020 at 4.00pm. We welcome all nominations.
Depending on the number of nominations, a process to appoint positions will be followed. For any enquiries, please contact Principal, Peter Brown.
