Thank you to parents and carers who were able to meet with class teachers last week to discuss student’s mid-year reports and learning progress. If you were unable to meet with your child’s teacher last week, teachers are always available throughout the term to talk with parents and carers after school. If you wish to speak to your child’s teacher please ring the school office to make an appointment or arrange a phone call.
Students Kinder to Grade 4 were delighted last week with the return of Ditto the friendly lion as part of the Bravehearts program. This program helps students to understand personal safety and teaches them ways to respond if they feel unsafe. It complements our school So Safe program which teaches children about personal safety, and about appropriate social behaviours. Please take the opportunity to talk to your children about these important safety messages.
Yesterday, our Grade 5-6 Students took part in the annual sports expo coordinated by the NWPSSA. Congratulations to all who took part and thank you to staff and parents who helped organise and supervise on the day.

Congratulations to Ciara Harvey, Mariam Loukili, Ashlee Oram, Chloe Gula, Ronan Moyle and Taylee Emms-Forrest who have been selected to represent their class on the SRC for Term 3. I look forward to working with these students and our Executives for this term. They have already started planning some events for the term including our Disco, which will be held in September.

Over the past 2 weeks our Grade 1-2 classes have thoroughly enjoyed participating in an Aboriginal inspired Exploration Galaxy.
Exploration Galaxy is our Early Childhood structured play-based learning program. It appeals to the children’s natural curiosity and desire to engage in experiences based on their interests, strengths and developing skills as they make sense of their world around them. Students have been exploring the distinct cultures of Aboriginal people through art, music and games. These activities have sparked many wonderings, which we will focus on during our own class time.

The Burnie Netball Association School Spring Roster will run from Saturday, 7th September. Girls and boys from Grades 2 to 6 who are interested in playing need to return a permission form to the office by Monday, 19th August. Permission forms can be collected from the student counter at the office.
A big thank you to Miss Gardner and Allana Burke who coached our BHPS Blue and BHPS Purple teams in the previous netball roster, and well done to all students who participated.
Yesterday, our 5-6 students travelled to Burnie to participate in the NWPSSA 5-6 Sports Expo. at various venues around Burnie/Somerset. Our students chose to participate in either Netball, Cricket, Football, King of the Court or Tennis. Luckily the weather held up with only a minor shower allowing the students to thoroughly enjoy themselves.
This Friday, we have the Terrapin Puppet Theatre bringing their show The Egg to BHPS. There will be two sittings:
9.30am Grades 3 – 6
11.00am Kinder – Grade 2
On Monday 12th August, we will be having a performance from African Beat, Salaka: Sharing the Spirit of Africa. This performance is for the whole school and will be starting at 1.30pm.
Past shows have always delighted students and we are all looking forward to these performances. Each show will be an hour long. Parents are welcome to attend.
As these are not Kinder days, parents are invited to attend these shows with their child.
Next week, from Tuesday, 13th to Thursday, 15th August, our Grade 5-6 students will be attending workshops in our Growing Up Program run by Family Planning Tasmania. The program has an age appropriate focus for our students on:
* Staying physically, emotionally and mentally healthy throughout life
* Protective behaviours, peer pressure and self-esteem
* Creating and maintaining healthy and meaningful relationships
All parents are encouraged to attend the Parent Session at 8.30am on Tuesday, 13th August, to hear an outline of the program content and ways in which you can support your child's learning.

Working with Vulnerable People Registration
Parents/carers/families are reminded that the Department of Education requires all employees, volunteers, contractors and external providers, or persons otherwise engaged in or associated with a child regulated activity, to maintain current Tasmanian registration to work with vulnerable people (RWVP).
This includes all persons (volunteers) who undertake activities without payment which will benefit the school or community and who are:
- over the age of 16
- members of the School Association and associated committees
- volunteers in the school canteen, uniform shop and library
- volunteers for activities (swimming carnivals, athletic carnivals, sporting competitions, school fairs)
- work experience students on placement over the age of 18
- instructors or leaders of before school/after school vacation care activity programs organised in conjunction with the school that take place at the school or its premises
- parents/guardians engaged in classroom help (reading, cooking, gardening), attending excursions or school camps
- parents/guardians directly participating in the Learning in Families Together (LIFT) program.
When signing in at the school office, please have your RWVP card with you. This is to be placed in the card holder attached to a lanyard and worn while you are volunteering.
How to apply for Registration sheet is attached. If you require any further information, please contact the office.
If your child is sick, we ask that you keep him/her at home. Should your child have a medical condition that requires prescription medication to be administered at school, it is a requirement that the doctor/pharmacist completes Administration of Medication Authorisation Form B, with details of the medication. Administration of Medication Authorisation Form A also needs to be completed by parent/care to authorise the school to administer the medication. These forms are available at the office and on our website.
Should your child require non-prescription medication whilst at school, Form A only is required.
All medication must be supplied in the original container or packaging with the instructions provided by the doctor/pharmacist and must be delivered to the school office, not the classroom.
Staff will be unable to administer any medication that is received without the correct authorisations as above, however parents are welcome to come in and administer medication when required.

FROM BOTTLE TOPS TO PROSTHETIC HANDS
Warawyn Early Learning in Wynyard is collecting plastic bottle tops to be made into prosthetic hands for young children. It takes approximately 250 lids to make a small hand, and 500 for an arm, but double the quantity are needed due to wastage during processing.
Acceptable bottle tops: Flat soft drink, water and milk bottle tops, including long life containers. The tops should be numbered either No. 2 or No. 4 in the recycled triangle, but not all are marked, so collect anyway. However large tops with these numbers are unable to be used as they are too large to shred with current machinery.
Tops which have other plastic or metal attached (including water bottle tops which have pull up tops) are not able to be processed, nor are any tops marked No. 5 or No. 7.
Bottle tops can be dropped into Boat Harbour Primary School. Please rinse all caps before donating and ensure that no extra plastic, metal or other material is attached.
